Sorry, but the way we speak, write and communicate is taking us straight back to our days in the cave. I'm not sure why, but the slaughtering of the English language is happening everywhere.   Since I’m in advertising, I take communicating pretty seriously. I’ve made plenty of spelling and grammatical errors that have caused reprints, apologies, time and money. Each time I screw up, I resolve to be a better proof reader and not always believe what spell check tells me. Then I get in a big hurry, and it happens again.

Language is powerful and we need to be careful with it. How you use words (and punctuation) can identify you as smart or dumb, lazy or bright. How we communicate defines us.  And in advertising, errors leave a blemish, however subtle, on the advertiser.

NEEDED.  FULLTIME EXPERIANCED AUTO COLLISION REPAIR TECH.  WE ARE AN UP AND COMING REPAIR SHOP WITH AN GROWING BASE.  WE OFFER PAY ACCORING TO EXPERIANCE.  BENEFITS OF MATCH RETIREMTN AFTER 6 MONTHS AND ROOM TO GROW WITH IN THE COMPANY.

I read this with amazement and promptly dismissed this company as stoopid and resolved to never do business with them.  (If you didn’t notice the many errors in the above ad, then I’m really skeered.)

The new Phone Books are Comming!  The new Phone Books are Comming!

This recent headline in a local newspaper classified section ran this way for a week!  I hear people say “I seen you” or “Where you at” and I hurry past them as if I might catch something.  This is not being snobby...it's being civilized. Does anyone not read, see, or even care?  Apparently not.  And again, I’m skeered.

Advertising people are sometimes accused of manipulating intelligent consumers into buying stuff they don’t need.  (We prefer to think of it as educate and inform.) But darn it, at least we try to spuhl write.
